The app's screens are currently in Japanese. Below, the Japanese names of buttons and settings are shown in brackets so you can find them. You can write to us in English.

Installing

iPhone / iPad: Open the TestFlight public link, install the TestFlight app, then tap “Install”. TestFlight applies updates automatically.

Android: Download apiece-arm64.apk (48 MB · 2026-10-04 · 1.0.0 (279) · arm64, SHA-256 begins 7652b7af5e843986) and open it to install. Because it does not come from a store, you need to allow “install unknown apps” the first time. To update, install the same file again (your data stays). On-device AI summaries (Gemini Nano) work on devices with AICore, such as Pixel 9 or later and Galaxy S25 or later. The model is prepared the first time; wait a while and return to the app. Cards in languages you don't read can be translated on the device with the card's 「日本語にする」 button (to translate automatically, turn on 「端末の中で訳す」 in 言語設定; it is off by default). 「原文」 switches back to the original text. The first time, about 30 MB of data is prepared for each language pair.

Frequently asked questions

Is the app in English?

Not yet. The app's screens are in Japanese for now. You can choose English as your reading language: articles in English are shown, and summaries and on-device translations come in English.

Articles don't appear

Your device fetches articles directly from each publisher's site. If a publisher has stopped its RSS feed or restricts access, the articles cannot be fetched. The list of news sites is updated every few minutes.

Summaries don't appear

On devices that can use on-device AI (iPhone 15 Pro or later on iOS 26 or later with Apple Intelligence turned on; on Android, Pixel 9 or later, Galaxy S25 or later and similar), stories reported by several sites are summarized automatically. The on-device AI does not summarize these cards:

These can be summarized if you connect an external AI with your own API key (if “Prefer on-device AI for summaries” (要約は端末内のAIを優先する) is on in the AI settings (AIの設定), the external AI is used only when the on-device AI could not write one). An on-device summary takes a few seconds per card, so if you swipe quickly you may move on before it is ready; go back and it will be there. On Android the model is downloaded the first time; wait a while and return to the app. Long-press the version label at the bottom of the settings (such as “apiece 1.0.0”) to open diagnostics, which shows the status of the on-device AI.

The same story is split into separate cards, or different stories share one card

Our server judges which articles belong together, and it still makes mistakes. Telling us helps fix them. If a card mixes different stories, use “This card mixes different stories” (このカード、別の話が混ざっている) on the card. If the same story is split across cards, write the card headlines in the form.

A summary is wrong

Summaries are written by the AI on your device (or an external AI you connected) from the articles' headlines, descriptions and body text. They can be wrong. Check the original articles listed under the card for accurate information. If you notice a mistake, please send the card headline and the wrong part through the form.

The text is too small or too large

Settings → Appearance → Text size (設定 → 見た目 → 文字の大きさ) lets you choose 90–150%. It applies on top of your device's text size setting.

What is “the earlier story” (前の話)?

Under a follow-up card, the previous day's coverage is linked source by source, so you can read it as a continuation of yesterday's story. They are listed side by side, not merged into one card.

The overview (iPhone / iPad)

Pinch a card with two fingers and the news ahead appears as tiles in two columns. You can also open it from the top button in the column next to the card. Tap a tile to go to that card; spread two fingers or use the back button to return to the cards.

Shared pages (iPhone / iPad)

When you tap “Share” (シェア) on a card that combines several sites, the app creates a page that lists the headlines and links of that card's articles (apiece.hitohitori.com/s/…) and shares it. Anyone with the link can see the page, and it is deleted one year after it was created. It does not include the articles' text. For a single article, the original article's link is shared as is.

I want to delete my reading records

Deleting the app deletes all records on the device. The records sent only during the test period (article URLs, time spent and similar) are identified only by a random number per device and are not linked to your name or email. If you want them deleted, let us know through the form.

Connecting an external AI with your own API key

In Settings → AI settings (設定 → AIの設定), choose an AI service and enter your API key. The key is stored in the device Keychain and never sent to our server. The material for summaries, “The story so far” and “Ask AI” (headlines, descriptions and body text) is sent directly to that AI service.

For publishers

What apiece fetches

apiece is an app in which each user's device fetches publishers' feeds (RSS and Atom) and article pages directly and displays them. In addition to the list of outlets and “groups of article URLs that report the same event”, our server delivers to users' devices the headlines of articles provided in publishers' feeds (RSS and Atom), without altering them, together with the publisher's name and a link to the original article. It does not distribute article text or descriptions. Every card shows the outlet's name and a link to the original article. Both the devices and our server identify themselves with a user agent that begins with apiece/0.1.

To stop being listed

Please send the outlet's name and domain (for example, example.com) through the contact form. Once we have confirmed it, we stop the following for that domain:

If a user adds your feed URL themselves, that user's device fetches it directly from you, as any other RSS reader does. Because this does not go through our server, we cannot stop it.
